The Difference between Te Amo and Te Quiero
You might be wondering what’s the difference between Te amo and Te quiero.
Te amo is I love you that is reserved for a husband and a wife or serious long-term relationships. Also, Te Amo is used between parents and their children in Latin American countries. So, Te amo isn’t the phrase for the casual “I love you” like in English among close friends or between couples who not seriously involved in.
In Spain, even between a husband and a wife, Te quiero is more common. A couple of my Spanish friends said, “Te amo” sounds too “cursi,” which means corny. I’m sure it depends on the couple, but I just wanted to share this locals’ insight.
Te quiero is much similar to the English “I love you.” Te quiero can be used between husbands and wives, boyfriends and girlfriends, or close friends.
Ready for the Next Step?
If you are ready to pop the question. Then here’s your phrase.
¿Quieres casarte conmigo?
Will you marry me?
The direct translation would be “do you want to marry me?” rather than “will you marry me?” But in Spanish speaking countries, they don’t use the future tense to ask for marriage. This is the most phrase in Spanish to propose.
